Common Vaping FAQs
Cheap Eliquid – Vaping FAQs & Beginner’s Guide
New to vaping or just want clearer answers? This guide explains the basics (MTL/DTL, ohms, nicotine strengths), how to buy genuine products, travel tips, and common troubleshooting.
UK health advice says vaping is less harmful than smoking, but it isn’t risk-free. Non-smokers and under-18s should not vape. (See “Health & legal” below.)
Basics
What is vaping?
Vaping is the heating of an e-liquid to create vapour, which is then inhaled. E-liquids can be used with or without nicotine.
Most e-liquids are made from PG (propylene glycol), VG (vegetable glycerine) and flavourings. Some also contain nicotine.
What am I inhaling?
You inhale vapour created by heating e-liquid ingredients such as VG, PG and flavourings. If you choose nicotine e-liquid, nicotine will also be present.
What does vaping taste like?
Vaping comes in a wide range of flavours (fruit, desserts, menthol, drinks, and tobacco-style flavours). If you’re switching from cigarettes, some people start with tobacco or menthol flavours, then move to fruit/dessert flavours over time.
Devices & Coils
What is an Ohm (Ω)?
An ohm (Ω) is a measure of electrical resistance. In vaping, it refers to the resistance of the coil inside your tank/pod.
- Lower resistance coils typically use more power and can produce more vapour.
- Higher resistance coils typically use less power and often suit a tighter, cigarette-like draw.
Always follow the coil’s recommended wattage range (usually printed on the coil or shown in the device instructions).
What is Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) vaping?
Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) is closer to smoking a cigarette: you draw vapour into your mouth first, then inhale into your lungs. MTL usually feels like a tighter draw and is commonly paired with higher nicotine (including nicotine salts).
What is Direct-to-Lung (DTL) vaping?
Direct-to-Lung (DTL) is more like a shisha-style inhale: you inhale vapour straight to the lungs. DTL is usually a more open/airy draw and often uses lower nicotine strengths because vapour production can be higher.
What’s the difference between freebase nicotine and nicotine salts?
- Nicotine salts are commonly used in pod kits and MTL devices and can feel smoother at higher strengths.
- Freebase nicotine is widely used across many e-liquids and strengths.
If you’re unsure, start with a pod kit + nicotine salts for a simple, beginner-friendly setup.
Genuine products
How do I know what I’m buying is genuine?
Many hardware brands include authenticity features such as scratch-off verification codes or QR checks (not all brands do). The safest approach is to buy from a trusted retailer that sources from official distributors.
At Cheap Eliquid, we source products from reputable UK/EU supply chains and aim to stock compliant products intended for the UK market.
Do you sell clones?
No. “Clones” are copied or counterfeit products. We do not knowingly stock clones and we aim to source genuine items through reputable distribution.
Health & legal
What are the health implications of vaping?
UK guidance says vaping is less harmful than smoking and exposes users to fewer toxins than cigarettes, but vaping isn’t risk-free. Non-smokers and young people should not take up vaping.
Earlier UK evidence reviews estimated vaping to be substantially less harmful than smoking (often quoted as “around 95% less harmful”), while noting uncertainty and ongoing research.
Will vaping help me quit smoking?
Many people use vaping to reduce or stop smoking. UK guidance notes e-cigarettes can be used to help people stop smoking.
If you’re trying to quit, using the right device type and nicotine strength matters. If you need medical advice, speak to a healthcare professional.
How old do you have to be to buy vape products in the UK?
In the UK, it’s illegal to sell nicotine vaping products to under-18s (and adults must not buy them on a child’s behalf).
If you’re ordering online, you may be asked to complete age verification checks.
Is there a danger of second-hand vapour?
UK guidance states there’s currently no evidence that vaping causes harm to other people around you, which differs from secondhand cigarette smoke.
Even so, it’s best to be considerate—especially around children, pregnant people, and in enclosed spaces.
Is it legal to vape indoors in the UK?
UK smokefree laws apply to smoking, not vaping. Many organisations set their own rules on vaping indoors, so always follow venue policies.
Nicotine warning: Nicotine is addictive. Vaping products are intended for adult smokers and vapers only.
Troubleshooting
Why is e-liquid coming out of my vape and into my mouth?
This can happen if the coil becomes oversaturated (often called “flooding”), if the device has been left unused for a while, or if the wattage/airflow isn’t matched to the coil.
- Check the coil is properly fitted and seals/O-rings are intact
- Ensure you’re within the coil’s recommended wattage range
- Try a few short puffs without pressing the fire button (or gentle draws on an auto-draw device) to clear excess liquid
- Keep the device upright when possible
If you get e-liquid on your lips or in your mouth, rinse with water and wipe the device/mouthpiece.
My vape tastes burnt — what causes that?
- The coil may be at the end of its life
- The wattage may be too high for the coil
- The coil may not be fully “primed” (soaked) before use
Replace the coil, check wattage, and allow fresh coils to soak for a few minutes after filling.
How often should I change my coil?
It varies by device, e-liquid type, and usage. Signs you may need a new coil include burnt taste, reduced flavour, poor vapour, or leaking.
Travel & etiquette
Can I take a vape on a plane?
UK guidance states e-cigarettes are allowed in hand luggage but not in hold luggage.
Always check your airline and destination rules. Never vape onboard the aircraft.
What about spare batteries when flying?
Aviation safety rules require spare lithium batteries to be protected and carried safely. The UK Civil Aviation Authority provides packing guidance for batteries and vaping devices.
- Carry batteries in a protective case
- Do not pack loose batteries where they can contact metal objects
Do vapes leave a smell?
Vapour can leave a scent, especially in enclosed spaces. Be considerate of others and follow venue policies.
Choosing products
Is vaping cheaper than smoking?
Many people find vaping cheaper over time than buying cigarettes, particularly with refillable pod kits and bottled e-liquid. Your cost depends on device type, how much you vape, and what you buy.
How do I choose the right vaping product for me?
- Beginner / simple: Pod kit + nicotine salts
- Cigarette-like draw: MTL device + higher resistance coil
- More vapour / airy draw: DTL kit + lower resistance coil (usually lower nicotine)
If you tell us what you currently smoke (how many per day) and what you prefer (tight draw vs airy, small device vs bigger kit), we can suggest a sensible starting setup.
