Battery Safety Guide

Cheap Eliquid – E-Cigarette & Vape Battery Safety Guide

Last updated: 23 December 2025

You may have seen stories about vape batteries overheating or “exploding”. In most cases, incidents are linked to incorrect use, damaged or counterfeit batteries, poor storage, or using the wrong charger.

Safety first

If a battery becomes unusually hot, swells, hisses, smells, or leaks: stop using it immediately, move it away from flammable materials, and dispose of it safely.

1. Li-Ion Battery Safety Basics

Lithium-ion batteries are safe when used correctly, but can be hazardous if misused.

Do:

  • Use genuine batteries from trusted suppliers
  • Inspect batteries for damage (wrap tears, dents, corrosion)
  • Store batteries in a protective case
  • Follow manufacturer instructions

Don’t:

  • Carry loose batteries in pockets or bags
  • Charge unattended, overnight, or on flammable surfaces
  • Use batteries that are damaged or exposed to liquid
  • Expose batteries to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight

2. Never Carry Loose Batteries

Loose batteries can short circuit if they contact metal objects like keys or coins.

  • Always use a plastic battery case for spares
  • Never carry batteries loose in a pocket, bag, or purse

3. Use the Correct Charging Equipment

  • Use chargers/cables designed for your device or battery
  • Label similar chargers to avoid mix-ups
  • Avoid cheap, unbranded chargers and cables

If you use removable batteries, a reputable external charger is often the safest option.

4. Mains Adaptors for USB Charging

Not all USB wall plugs are suitable for vape devices.

  • Use reputable branded adaptors
  • Avoid “fast charge” plugs unless your device supports it
  • As a general guide, many devices work best with a 5V / 1A adaptor unless the manufacturer states otherwise.

5. Never Leave Charging Unattended

  • Do not charge overnight or unattended
  • Charge on a non-flammable surface
  • Keep away from soft furnishings and paper

If you notice overheating, hissing, popping, swelling or a smell: unplug immediately and stop using the battery/device.

6. Avoid Overcharging

  • Unplug when fully charged
  • Don’t leave batteries on charge “just in case”
  • Replace batteries that run hot during normal use or no longer hold charge properly

7. Turn Off / Lock Your Device

Locking or powering off prevents accidental firing and overheating.

  • Many devices lock/off with 3–5 clicks of the power button
  • Check your device manual for the correct method

8. Avoid Extreme Temperatures & Sunlight

  • Don’t leave devices/batteries in hot or freezing cars
  • Avoid direct sunlight, radiators, and heaters
  • Let devices return to room temperature before charging

9. Never Use a Damaged Battery

Stop using a battery if it has:

  • Torn wrap or exposed metal
  • Dents, swelling, corrosion, leaking
  • Been exposed to liquid
  • Unusual heat during normal use

If in doubt, replace it.

10. Disposal & Recycling

Used batteries are hazardous waste and must be disposed of responsibly.

  • Do not place batteries in household waste
  • Use a local battery recycling point (many supermarkets and recycling centres accept batteries)

11. Tips for Removable Battery Mods

  • Use “married pairs” if your device requires two batteries (same brand/model, same age, always used/charged together)
  • Never mix different brands/capacities/ages in one device
  • Ensure wraps/insulators are intact
  • Use battery types recommended by your device manufacturer

12. Official Guidance

For additional guidance, you can read UK advice from the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) on the GOV.UK website.

What’s the biggest cause of vape battery incidents?

Loose batteries contacting metal objects (short circuits) and using incorrect chargers are two of the most common causes.

Should I charge my vape overnight?

No. Never leave batteries charging unattended or overnight.

What should I do if my battery wrap is torn?

Stop using it. A torn wrap can cause a short circuit. Replace or rewrap the battery safely before using again.
